Deep Vein Thrombosis: a blood clot (thrombosis) that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg--usually between the ankle and the upper calf. The condition is serious, potentially fatal even; if the clot travels through the blood stream it may lodge in the heart or lungs and cause sudden death.
The mechanism for thrombosis in travellers is probably due to a combination of immobilisation, dehydration and underlying risk factors, such as other diseases which result in a predisposition to thrombosis (thick, ketchupy blood).
Recent studies indicate that wearing compression stockings (those really sexy-looking ones, available in the "support hose" section of your local Walgreen's) can reduce the risk of symptomless DVT and foot oedema. It's a frightening condition. David Bloom (NBC correspondent) also suffered DVT in 2003 and was not so fortunate.
